In the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870-1871 and its extension with the painful episode of the civil war, on the occasion of the Paris Commune from March to May 1871, women took a predominant place at all levels of society. For this conference, the historian Patrick Serre looks back at three symbolic portraits: the Empress Eugénie de Montijo, the officer of the Bataillon des Franc-tireurs du Doubs Marie Favier and the Commune fighter Louise Michel.
This major historical event demonstrates that the fight for real equal rights made real progress during the conflict, which was marked by the extremely active and often unrecognised role, whether voluntarily or not, of French women plunged into the war.
Patrick Serre is a university lecturer, teacher, amateur and passionate historian, specialist of the 19th century and more particularly of the Second Empire, the 1870-1871 war and the Commune. He is a native of Germany and lives in Burgundy where he has been living for over 20 years.
