Underground mineral resources are plentiful and varied in the area of Creusot-Montceau : red sandstone, granite, or even coal, which allowed the industrial growth of the region. On the hillsides of town, certain variety of sandstones reaching the surface create an acid environment. Yet, some vegetation was able to grow and thrive: moss, lichens, grass and bushes.
A free, signposted walking trail gives visitors access to the site. Nature lovers and walking enthusiasts enjoy the stunning landscapes and biodiversity. During the walk, a whole ecosystem unfolds before your eyes: plants, insects, small animals.
